When it came to applying to college, I had no idea where to start. The Common App was confusing, I didn’t know anything about letters of recommendation, and I had no idea where to even start on my college essay. Thanks to Mrs. Byars, I was able to complete most of my college applications before the summer ended; and with little stress throughout the process. I can say with full certainty that if it weren’t for Mrs. Byars, I don’t think I would have had a strong college application nor would I have completed all of my applications so early. Mrs. Byars was always communicating with me very quickly and efficiently. She gave me step-by-step instructions for each step of the application process and she helped me create a strong college essay. She even helped me with figuring out how to navigate through apps such as the Common App and Naviance. Before working with Valerie, bringing up the ‘C’ word would make me shut down because of how stressful it made me. It got so bad that my parents had to take me out to lunch and ambush me in order to even get me to think about what colleges I wanted to apply to. My parents didn’t know where to start and I needed a plan to function. With each meeting, I felt less and less worried about applications, essays, and activity lists. She helped me feel more confident about what I had to offer. Especially once school started again, I realized just how much she had helped me. My applications were almost entirely taken care of before my senior year even started. Because I don’t have that extra layer of stress, I'm able to focus on spending time with my family before I leave. Being able to work with Valerie has been one of the best decisions I and my parents could have made.
